台灣梅花鹿，悽息於海拔二百公尺以下的叢林草莽，通常公鹿的體型較大，肩高約九十八公分，角長可達七十多公分，而雌鹿的體型較小，且頭上無角。 身體的毛色會隨春季節轉換而更替，夏季為栗紅色，冬季為淡褐色，背部中間有一條黑帶，兩側則有迷人的白色斑點。雄鹿從二歲開始長角，而已每年增加一個分叉，五歲後才停止分叉。

        梅花鹿的脾氣很好，主食是樹葉和牧草，牠們習慣在固定的地方覓食。常會看到牠們聚在樹下靜臥打盹兒，或將剛吃過的東西反芻。

       梅花鹿生性敏感帶點神經質，害羞而機警，一有風吹草動，便會馬上伸長脖子，瞪大眼睛進入警戒狀態。

       當您乘著綠島夜空的星星，騎著摩托車，帶上探照燈，發現沿路上有一雙發亮的眼晴，那可能就是讓人驚喜萬分的梅花鹿喔!

      The Green lsland was known as the 'Deer lsland' in 60s because of breeding spotted deer in the wild. Spotted deer in named because of its plum blossom-like white spots on its back. Formosan spotted

       deer mostly lives in forests and wilderness at elevation of200 meters or under. Usually, a stag is larger in slze, with with shoulder height about 98 cm and antler over 70 cm long.

       A doe is smaller and has no antler. lts coat would change color in different seasons, chestnut red in summer and light brown in winter.  On the center of its back there is ablack belt,and there are white spots on two sides. A stag starts to grow antler at the age of two,and grow one additional fork each year until the age of five.

       Spotted  deer  has  mild  temper, and consrmes mostly leaves and pasture. lt
prefers to forge in fixed area.

       You can often see them taking a nap under the trees ort ruminating their food. lt is very sensitive, even a little nervous, also shy and watchful.lt responds to slight commotion and stays alert by looking around.
